Have you been there? Staring at a mission statement, the bloated, is chaotic and completely ignorable? I know what I have. I've worked for several organizations saw their mission statement, not as a guiding principle, but as a catch-all, where everything they said, wanted to say was. These models are usually a paragraph or so long, and they use every popular catch-phrase. I wonder is whether to be a future archaeologist able to date models of the Lingo (see this one uses "synergy" and this says: "paradigm shift" in place of "quantum leap").
Most models do not work. They took hours or days in the life of an organization, and in the end they gave back almost nothing. But with a little effort, you can write a mission statement that will really help you.
Learn say 'no'
A really good mission statement gives you a way to say "no" to a good chance (yes, you really want a good chance of turning sometimes below). One time I worked with a church, they are Mission Statement: "We are on a mission from God." You could recognize from the movie The Blues Brothers. It's weird, but it is not particularly helpful in determining what the organization does or does not do. It does not give direction. It does not give them a chance to say, "No".
In contrast, I worked for Starbucks Coffee Company, while I was at school. Your Mission Statement: "To provide an uplifting experience that enriches people's daily lives." So, for all that we have during a shift at work, we might ask ourselves if we have the mission have been met. For most things we could a clear "yes" or "no" answer. While on mission it was completely to smile, wit and remember customer's name, I could a health clinic begin in our lobby excluded. Although it is a good thing, it is not a part of the mission. If your mission to provide amazing plumbing services available, you should turn down a chance to be a restaurant to buy, even if it is a good deal. If your mission is to train marathon runners, you should turn down a chance to design web pages.
If you can not say 'no', then you will be pulled in a thousand different directions, and it will make be almost impossible progress. But if you have a model that allows you to say "no" when you need, you will be able to say "yes" if it is the right opportunity.
Make it specific
If your mission statement is so vague that any organization in the world that could take it, then it is not good for you much. A mission statement should tell you why you are unique in the world. If you know your raison d '
